A bright bubble

20140920-Ernesto-Cucalu

“Subway stations aren’t really inspiring places. They are a gateway you have to get through, what the environment looks like doesn’t really matter. But sometimes the environment does catch your eye, like this orange box that caught my eye while traveling the endless tunnels of the Madrilenian underground. The bright color misleads you, this is not something you use in case of danger like a fire, but it is a communication tool for when you have questions. Just press the button bubble and it connects you directly to a helpful voice. I wonder how much it gets used, since everybody uses their phones to get travel information…”(Ernesto from Madrid, Spain).

Very sharp hoops

20140919--Evita---Cucalu

“Me and my boyfriend like to go on little crazy adventures, this was one of them. Before heading out to Mexico for a holiday, we decided to get our eyes checked together. Pretty cute, right? I have never needed glasses, but you never know for sure, so I wanted to get them checked anyway.  While waiting for the optometrist, we were both giggling and teasing each other and suddenly I stared at this big machine and thought it was the coolest thing. So I snapped a little hoop right before the optometrist walked in. Turned out I saw pretty sharp through those hoops, because it turns out I still don’t need glasses!” (Evita from Ventura, California)

Socks and squares

20140918--Milan--Cucalu

“I love turning my environment into a playground, wherever I am. Did you ever see those huge concrete Lego-like blocks? You see them on most streets. They’re meant to block cars. To me, they’re a portal to childhood nostalgia. As a grown-up, it’s easy to hop on and off those those blocks, although it feels as if I’m mounting a massive Lego-creation. A playground and shapehunt at the same time, actually. All you need to do is stand on top of one, pull up your striped, rainbow socks stacked into some ragged sneakers and snap a picture. Nothing to be ashamed of, since I’m in play mode, in my own bubble.” (Milan from Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

Chasing circles

20140917--Evie---Cucalu

“I went for a little walk with my dog in town. Together we welcomed the end of summer by playing with the acorns. He’d chase them after I kicked them back and forth. Luckily, he totally loved it and kept running back for new ones to play with. Since I was in need of a creative retake for one of my missions, I decided this acorn-dot would get me that golden medal.. Although my dog might deserve it as much as I do.” (Evie from Nijmegen, the Netherlands)

A reflective square

20140916---Barbara---Cucalu

“To get the right angle for this square, I almost climbed onto a stranger’s balcony. Whenever I stroll through unknown neighbourhoods, I like peeking into homes and cars. The Dutch don’t really do curtains, for some reason. This van’s window immediately caught my eye. Only after doing a double take, I saw the mirror. I wish it had shown the rear view of the car though, since that would’ve shown you a bridge and boulevard. The photo is taken on Borneo-island, a dock-like neighbourhood facing the canals leading to the IJmeer, a large open water in The Netherlands. Because of the water reflection, light’s often beautiful there early mornings and evenings during the golden hours.” (Barbara from Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
